Digital Arts
E-Publication
The Brief
To design and create a special-edition digital publication for the magazine, Digital Arts, that focuses on a specific theme. The publication should be engaging and interesting to read while also reflecting the unique visual style and language of the magazine.
the Concept
Pixel arts was the theme chosen for this particular e-publication project. This was because it suited the nature of the magazine which covers a variety of graphic design-related topics. In addition, there were a lot of interesting facts and history behind the development of this unique art style which has evolved with the advancement in technology and games, hence making it an engaging topic to talk about. Throughout this project, I learnt the ways of enhancing users’ reading experience through the use of interactive features that were unique to e-publications (e.g. videos, games and popups). However, it was a challenging task because it had to be relevant and done tastefully, otherwise, it would simply make the reading experience confusing.
Some articles were self-illustrated, while interactive features such as the “Character Select” of artists were done with AfterEffects to give off a true game-like feel, enabling the reading experience uniquely engaging.
At the same time, I was able to further develop my illustration skills by exploring how to illustrate pixel art. This allowed me to push out of my boundaries and break into new and diverse areas of illustration thus making me a more adaptable illustrator.
